NANAIMO – President & CEO of the Nanaimo Port Authority, Bernie Dumas considers back to back calls by Princess and Celebrity Cruise Lines as proof that the Nanaimo’s gateway to Central Vancouver Island opens the door for passengers looking for a highly desirable preferred destination.

“We are so fortunate to be located in one of the most desirable destinations in the world and once travellers discover what we have here many plan to return,” says Dumas.

“Economically, this cruise call will have an average immediate impact of over $300,000 to the region. Additionally, passengers seriously consider our destination for a future multi-day visit. Our Island hospitality program with several partners is exceptional and I know from passengers’ feedback that our product is one of the best you can find anywhere.”

The 294 metre Coral Princess arrived Sunday, September 18th. It is one of two Panamax ships owned and operated by the Princess Cruise Line, and has a passenger capacity of 2000 and 900 crew.

Returning from a spring visit the 294 metre Celebrity Infinity called on Monday September 19th, carrying   approximately 2200 passengers and 1200 crew.

As passengers arrived in the cruise ship terminal, Tourism Nanaimo Travel Counsellors greeted passengers with entertainment and pointed the way to photo opportunities with the RCMP in Red Serge, the ‘Big Tub’ and displays of racing tubs from the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society. Nanaimo Bar samplings are also always part of our renowned hospitality.

Complimentary shuttles transported passengers from the cruise ship terminal through downtown Nanaimo where they engaged with local volunteers organized by the Downtown Nanaimo BIA. Contact with local culture include the downtown area, galleries, eateries and walking tours which receive positive passenger feedback on a consistent basis.
